Q: Why can't I run
the CD from the hard disc?
Q: Why can't I copy
to hard disc?
A: There is an in-built
piracy prevention measure in the CD-ROM which prevents it
from being copied onto a hard disc and, therefore, it can
only be used from the CD-ROM drive. Licences for network use
are available at an extra charge. Please contact EuroTalk
sales for further information.

Q: I have a problem
running the World Talk TV-quiz.
A: Many PCs have an
automatic default to "show video full screen" so you need to
change this setting. Go into control panels, look for multi
media settings and select video control. Make sure it says
"show video in window". Your disc should now work
satisfactorily.

persists after following our advice, please explain exactly
what is happening in as much detail as possible, and
remember to enter all the information as specified
below.

Q: I get an error
message when running DVD advanced language product.
A: These titles have
been tested extensively on a very wide range of hardware. It
has come to light that there are some problems with
operating systems which the hardware manufacturers listed
below pre-install on their computers. Please note that these
manufacturers are now shipping corrected software on their
machines, but in the meantime the fix below should help.
(These fixes are supplied by the manufacturers and are
detailed on all our DVD-ROM titles. The fixes will also
solve problems running other CD/DVD-ROM titles from other
publishers.)
You should check your own system to see if it falls into
this category.
This "readme" is on all our DVD titles and refers to
software updates on the DVD itself.
Attention Dell, Packard Bell
and Patriot users!
(And other hardware that uses Intervideo DVD or Zoran
SoftDVD)
Some manufacturers' DVD-ROM computer systems (shipped prior
to June 2000) had problems with the DVD playback software
pre-installed on the computer. The following fixes have been
supplied by the manufacturers:
Dell and Patriot, InterVideo WinDVD users:
If this DVD-ROM gives an error "MCI Error - the device does
not support this command", it is likely that you are running
an early version of WinDVD. You should browse on this
DVD-ROM, and run one of the following by double-clicking:
InterVideo\IVIFix.bat - for Windows 98
InterVideo\IVIFix_Win2k.bat - for Windows 2000Packard Bell,
Zoran
SoftDVD users:
Packard Bell DVD-ROM systems shipped prior to May 2000 have
a error in the Zoran DVD player, causing the last few
seconds of any video clip not to have audio. You should
install an update to a later version of SoftDVD MAX (version
3.6.0062), included on this DVD-ROM. Browse on this DVD-ROM,
and run by double-clicking:
SoftDVD\setup.exe
If you find that your problem is not covered by this fix
please let us know and we will do all we can to help you. We
will need all the information listed at the
end of this page.

GGWS/14
Q: I don't understand the
scoring procedure on Talk Now.
Q: Why does my score go down
sometimes when I run the programme at a subsequent date?
A: You will note, from having started the
game, that the objective is to score a maximum of 1800
points.
There are in total 36 different games. There is one hard and
one easy game for each section in the roulette wheel, making
18 games. In each of these games you can score a maximum of
50 points, giving a total maximum score for the roulette
wheel of 900 points. Once you are starting to master these
games you should then go on to the little man in the bottom
right hand corner of the screen (who looks something like a
croupier with very long arms when needed). He has in store
for you another 18 games - again nine easy and nine hard.
The easy games each have a maximum of 45 points, and the
hard games a maximum of 55, so that between them they
present a further maximum of 900 points to give a grand
total of 1800 points.
You can play any of the games as many times as you like, and
for each game the questions will be drawn from a pool such
that you may or may not get the same questions again the
next time you play, and they certainly won't appear in the
same order. In fact the random selection of the questions is
deliberately biased by the computer to ask more often the
questions that you get wrong, so that it is in fact
concentrating on the words on which you are weakest. As a
result, the croupier game is very difficult and sometimes
very annoying since, in order to get your 1800 points total,
you will need full marks in these games just the same as for
any others, and this is not easy to achieve. They have all
been tested, however, by people whose mother tongue is the
same language - hence confirming that it is possible to get
the full marks once you know the language. We believe that
most people's objective is to be able to learn the
vocabulary in this disc to that level - such that you have
the same instant recall of the words as would a native
speaker.
Some people think that every time they play a game no matter
what points they score these will be added to their total.
I'm sure you will realise that this would make it far too
easy. What actually happens is that the computer remembers
your last score in each game and uses this to compile your
total - hence only when you have full marks in every game
can you have a perfect score for the disc of 1800 points.
Thus, for example, if you do score 49 points on one of the
really difficult games and you re-play it, only to get a
reduced score of, say, 48 points, your grand total score
will be reduced by one!

Q:
I am trying to install, but I find it
doesn't work.
Q: Nothing happens when I put the disc
in the CD-ROM drive.
A:
Try using Autorun instead of installing.
There is no advantage in trying to run the software by
installing on Windows 95/98/2000/XP
since all our products run directly from the CD. Simply
switch on the computer and, when Windows has finished
loading, put the CD in the drive - from then on just follow
the on-screen instructions.
Most PCs have Autorun activated - if not, you can activate
it by following these steps:
Go to the Control Panels and double click on the 'System'
file. Click the 'Device Manager' tab and find the CD/DVD
drive. Expand it by clicking the '+'. Highlight the brand
name of the CD and click on Properties. Click the 'Settings'
tab and make sure there is a checkbox on the 'Auto insert
notification'. Now re-start the PC.

Q:
Why do I get a "Bad File Data" error message?

A:
This means that your computer is unable to
read the disc for some reason:
EITHER - the disc is scratched or corrupted in some way -
look on the shiny side and see if you can see any scratches.
OR - the disc is dirty - look for finger prints or smudges -
you can clean these by wiping with a soft, dry tissue or
cloth.
OR - your drive is malfunctioning - sometimes this can be
resolved by using a lens cleaning kit such as those
available from shops for Audio CD players
If your disc is scratched, return it to EuroTalk and we will
replace it free of charge.
Note: If you experience this error on multiple discs, it is
likely that the problem is with the drive itself.

Q:
I have problems hearing playback using Win.95
or 98.
Q:
I can't record my own voice.
A:
There are several ways to adjust the volume of
your computer, but it's essential that you enable Automatic
Gain Control (AGC). To do this, follow the instructions
below:
ADJUSTING RECORD VOLUME IN WINDOWS 95/98
Specific details of this vary between different sound cards
- see individual card documentation for details. However,
here is a general guide for setting the input volume to
maximum.
* Bring up the Volume control panel by double-clicking the
"Volume" icon at the bottom right of the task bar. (If you
don't have one of these, try re-installing your sound card
software.)
* Select "Options/Properties" from the menu and select
"Adjust volume for recording". Check that "Microphone" is
selected among "Show the following volume controls". Click
"OK".
* Select "Options/Advanced Controls".
* Check that Microphone input is selected and set the
Microphone volume slider to its maximum.
* Select the Microphone "Advanced" button and look for a
check box marked "Microphone Gain Control", "Microphone
Extra Gain", "Input AGC" or something similar. If found,
select it.
* Click OK and close the advanced controls.
* Close the volume control panel

Q: Why do I get the message "Can't draw
text"?
A:
See below "Can't draw text" problem on Windows
NT4 and 2000
THE PROBLEM
The programme is normally designed to autoboot, which means
that when you put the CD in the drive it knows exactly what
to do - and it works. However, on NT and 2000 people with
autoboot disabled sometimes try to install the programme and
then run it using INSTALL.EXE. This is the execute for the
old Windows 3.1 16-bit version of the programme (which we
have been reluctant to get rid of because - believe it or
not - some customers are still using Windows 3.1 and still
appreciate it).
The executable for 95 onwards - 32 bit- is INSTAL32.EXE. We
have tested this thoroughly and we can't find fault with it.
However, if you run the 16-bit version INSTALL.EXE it
definitely goes wrong - usually by giving an error "Can't
draw text", occasionally by crashing some display drivers.
THE SOLUTION
If you have not already run INSTALL.EXE, then either
autoboot the CD, or install the programme using
INSTAL32,EXE.
If you HAVE already run INSTALL.EXE, then you first need to
get rid of the 16-bit version of the programme, which for
some reason Windows installs under "All Users". You will
need administrator-level access for this. To delete all
EuroTalk 16-bit programmes:
a. On Windows NT4, run NT Explorer, browse to
"\WINNT\Profiles\All Users\Start Menu\Programmes" and delete
the "EuroTalk Multimedia" folder.
b. On Windows 2000, run Windows Explorer, browse to
"\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programmes"
and delete the "EuroTalk Multimedia" folder.
Now run INSTAL32.EXE to install the 32.bit version.
We apologise that the instructions do not point this out
clearly but this problem has only just become apparent to
us. In the longer term we need to remove the 16-bit version
and no doubt this will be quite soon - which, hopefully,
will resolve the problem once and for all.
If this doesn't work for you it may be that you have an old
disc which is incompatible with NT. Tell us the disc number
(on the shiny side, it's a letter followed by either four or
five digits) and we'll arrange to have it replaced if we
find it is an old one.

A:
There is more than one Instant Immersion
package so you may have a package containing discs from
other publishers in addition to EuroTalk.
Products from EuroTalk Interactive are:

- World Talk!
- Interactive Picture Dictionary
- Listen (2-disc set) in English only
Most of your questions regarding the above products will be
answered in this web support page.
With regard to the discs which are NOT EuroTalk products
these are:

- 5-in-1 Dictionary
If you have problems with these last three discs (or any
subsequent additions to the package) you must look at the
specific disc label for information on technical support
with regard to that product, as we regret that it is NOT
published by EuroTalk and we are unable to support it
because we know nothing about its content.

Q:
I am having trouble installing Instant
Immersion.
(Not available in England.)
A:
Despite what you might have read elsewhere,
you don't need to install for Windows 95/98/NT/2000/ME/XP -
the instructions apply only to 3.1.
Simply load the disc into the CD-ROM drive and the
programme will start automatically. As soon as you've typed
in your name you can start using the programme.
If for some reason you have disabled 'autorun' on your
system, you can re-enable it. Go to the Control Panels and
double click on the 'System' file. Click the 'Device
Manager' tab and find the CD/DVD drive. Expand it by
clicking the '+'. Highlight the brand name of the CD and
click on 'Properties'. Click the 'Settings' tab and make
sure there is a checkbox on the 'Auto insert notification'.
Now re-start the PC.

Q:
There's a big jump from Talk Now to World
Talk. Am I missing something?
A:
No, you're not missing anything. The rationale
behind World Talk is such that the student is learning to
listen to (and ultimately begin to understand) the language,
by hearing key words. This is an essential skill which needs
to be developed as part of the understanding of a new
language. By hearing the key words they will eventually sink
in and you will be able to score points simply by
recognising these words at first. Soon, with constant
repetition, you will find yourself understanding other words
and you will begin to have a grasp of the language as it is
spoken.
We have, however, also recognised that there are many people
who would still welcome more learning a la Talk Now so, as a
company, one of our next projects is to bring out a
follow-on to Talk Now aimed at increasing vocabulary.
However, there is at least a six month period between
conception and fruition, so we would ask you to be patient.
In the meantime, try clicking on the life belt which you'll
find at the bottom left of your screen and then the question
mark at the bottom right. They will at least give you an
idea of the object of each exercise. When learning their
mother tongue, small children are unable to read, write or
understand very much of their own language and they learn
from constant repetition by the parents and other adults.
Once you've clicked on the life belt to see what's required
of you, then click on the question mark for the repetitive
element and you'll be surprised at how soon the different
sounds sink into the brain.

Q:
Interactive Picture Dictionary (USA only)
System error:MCI Error: MMMSYSTEM277 A problem occurred in
initializing MCI. Try restarting Windows.
A:
Your error message may be slightly different
but if it still contains the words MCI error/initialising we
think these few problems with the dictionary are because we
have used a codec called Indeo5 for the opening animation.
We thought Indeo5 was available on all systems by now - it
now appears that there are still a very few systems which
don't have it.
You should be able to get it by installing the latest
version of Windows Media Player, available from
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/mediaplayer
Please try the download suggested and you should also try
installing the latest DirectX from the disc. If this doesn't
work, we suspect the problem to be with your video drivers.

Q:
Why do I get a lot of static sound when I try
to play back my recorded voice on a Compaq computer?
A:
We have now managed to isolate the problem
you've had recording your voice on your Compaq computer. The
report below, from one of our software engineers, provides
all of the detail together with a fix which appears to work.
Before proceeding, however, you should be aware as follows:
1) The problem is a Compaq one which applies to any of their
5000 or 5WV series using the ADI SoundMax chip. If your
computer does NOT meet this criteria we do not recommend you
to use the fix, although to date all the customers who have
reported the problem do meet this criteria.
2) The fix will auto-install on your machine and can be
downloaded from the Compaq web site (full details shown
below and it's called softpaq "SP17685"). This fix was not
"designed" to solve the problem that we have discovered but
nevertheless does the trick. It is an update to your sound
drivers and may also fix some other problem - of which you
may or may not be aware!
3) The down side is that you need to download 15MB and this
may take up to an hour! We understand from Compaq that if
this is a problem you may be able to obtain a CD containing
"SP17685" from your local Compaq support centre.
FAULT: EuroTalk language products fail to record (records
garbage, produces static sound) on recent Compaq Presarios
(e.g. Presario SWV354, 5000 series)
REASON FOR FAULT: This appears to be a bug in the Compaq
SoundMAX audio drivers version 5.12.01.2509 supplied with
the machine, causing record to fail at 22,050 Hz, 16 Bit,
Mono and 11,025 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo settings. This problem
can be verified using Windows Sound Recorder.
SOLUTION: Compaq service pack SP17685 contains updated ADI
1881 SoundMax II drivers version 5.12.01.3019 which appear
to fix the fault. The pack can be downloaded from
ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/softpaq/sp17501-18000/sp17685.exe

POSSIBLE SIDE-EFFECTS: The Presario SWV354 is not actually
listed amongst the products affected by this service pack,
so installing it may have unknown side-effects (though
personally we doubt it). You should also note that the size
of the service pack is 15M - not a convenient download!

Q:
Why do I get message "This programme has
performed an illegal operation and will be shut down"?
A:
You may be trying to copy to your hard disc
without a licence to do so. If so, please contact us to
enquire about a licence upgrade. Alternatively, you may be
running incompatible software whilst trying to access our
product. Close down everything else and see whether the
product works. If it doesn't work, the problem is with your
computer, so we would advise you to consult an engineer.

Q:
Error message "can’t write profile".
A:
The application is using a '.ini' file in
the windows/winnt directory.
To make it work, the access privileges of this file need to
be modified to allow read/write access for all users of this
file. This allows the application to be run from a
"restricted" user account without having to be an
"administrator" or "power" user.
The file in question is :
For Talk-Now products - "tlknwXX.ini"
For WorldTalk products - "wldtlkXX.ini"
For Vocabulary Builder products - "mmfcAAA.ini"
For Asterix products - "asAAAN.ini"
For StoryWorld products - "StorywN.ini"
For Ecoutez 1 and 2 - "EcoutezN.ini"
For Listen 1 and 2 - "ListenN.ini"
Where :
XX is 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,....99
e.g. 2 is English, 3 is French, 4 is German , 5 is Spanish,
etc.
AAA is e.g. GBR for English, FRA for French, GER for German,
SPA for Spanish.
N is 1 or 2 for the disk number (Asterix, StoryWorld,
Listen, Ecoutez)
After running the program as an Administrator, locate the
above file, right-click on it and select "Properties", then
choose the "Security" tab.
The top box has a list of groups in it e.g.
Administrators
Power Users
SYSTEM
Users
Restricted users are usually members of "Users", so hi-light
the "Users" line in the top box and look at the bottom box,
"Permissions". Make sure that the "Write" box is checked
(normally it *isn't* checked) and then click "Ok".
Log in as a restricted user, and check that the product
works.
Because this setting affects all members of the group
"Users", the product should work for *all* members of that
group.

GGWS/30
Q:
WM_PAINT exception running Windows 98 or 2000
A:
The most common cause of this problem is
trying to run the latest version of Talk Now using only 256
colours (8-bit colour quality). Talk Now requires at least
16-bit colour quality (sometimes known as "high colour" or
"true colour"). If you don't know how to change your colour
settings, see the advice below.
If you are already using 24 or 32-bit colour quality and you
get this error, it may indicate a shortage of memory. In
this case, try reducing the colour quality down to 16-bits.
If changing the colour quality doesn't resolve the issue,
this may indicate a problem with your graphics drivers.
Try downloading the latest version from the manufacturer's
web-site.

HOW TO CHANGE COLOUR DEPTH ON A PC
Place your mouse cursor on the desktop.
Right click.
Click on Properties
Click on Settings
Go to Colours Option
Click on scroll bar and select 16-bit, 24-bit or 32-bit
colour quality (high colour or true colour)
Click on Apply
Another box will appear, so click OK
Click OK again

Please check which operating system you are running and then
follow the corresponding advice below.

Q: MCI error and I'm running
Windows XP SP1
A:
If you are running the version of Windows XP
that comes pre-installed with
Service Pack 1 (SP1) then you may get errors such as as "MCI
error - unknown
video format". This is now a Microsoft acknowledged problem
due to an
omission in this version of Windows. Microsoft have
released a fix for
this missing-Indeo-in-XP-SP1 problem.
To resolve this problem, obtain and install the "327979:
Recommended
Update" from the Windows Update Web site:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

further information on
this problem.
If installing 327979: Recommended Update doesn't fix the
problem, then try the additional advice under ET.33 below.

Q: MCI error running Windows
systems other than XP SP1.
A:
If you are running versions of Windows other
than the version of XP that comes
pre-installed with SP1, and you get errors such as as "MCI
error - unknown
video format" or some other message i.e. Media Not Open,
then this can be caused by a variety of problems. You need
to try the following:
1) Make sure you are using the latest version of the
video drivers
for your graphics card - see the manufacturer's web site.
You should also do the same for your sound card drivers.
2) Try installing the latest DirectX from
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx
3) Try installing the latest Windows Media Player
from
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/mediaplayer
4) Try uninstalling any third-party DVD players, as
these have been
known to mess up MPEG1 replay. If uninstalling the DVD
player fixes the
problem, then contact the supplier of the player software
for an update.
5) Certain video editing software, such as some
products by Pinnacle, have also been known to cause
problems. If so, contact the supplier.

subject box and tell us the hub number of your disc,
together with the answers to the following questionnaire.

Q:
What do I do if I get the message,
"System error 18, 3 can't play sound"?
Q: Why can't I play my recorded voice
back? (Not everyone gets the error message but the problem
is the same.)
A:
It is essential to run the most up to date
version of your sound card drivers. First of all upgrade
them by downloading the latest version from the
manufacturer’s web site. Then re-start your computer. This
normally cures the problem. If the error persists, contact
